세미나 제목 : Switching Technology based on silicon photonics for energy-efficient networks
발표초록 : The large-scale integrated optical matrix switch is essential for next generation
optical networks including flexible multi-degree node systems, densely integrated computing systems and data centers, and dynamic optical path networks. Silicon-based optical waveguides are expected to play crucial roles for realizing more compact optical matrix switches with ultra-dense integration of optical elements compared to the conventional silica-based optical waveguides. Silicon nano-wire waveguides make optical devices very compact with a strong confinement factor owing to the high refractive index contrast between Si (~ 3.48) and SiO 2 (~1.444) but, on the other hand, introduce large polarization dependence including polarization mode dispersion, polarization dependent loss, and polarization dependence of operating wavelength, which is one of the big challenges remaining in silicon photonics.
In this presentation, I will introduce a VICTORIES (Vertically Integrated Center for Technologies of Optical Routing toward Ideal Energy Savings) project at AIST (Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Japan, and mainly discuss a polarization-diversity switch based on silicon wire waveguides as a building block for ultra-compact polarization independent large-scale optical matrix switches. Additionally, the N × N matrix switches, electronics-photonics convergent technologies, and their applications (data centers) will be discussed in the final section.
