Motor vehicle crashes cause significant losses to society such as life and property losses, medical cost and traffic congestion. In particular, crashes involving heavy vehicles generally result in more severe injuries due to higher impacts of collisions on vehicle bodies. Thus, it is important to identify unique characteristics of heavy-vehicle-involved crashes and understand how heavy vehicles interact and have conflicts with passenger cars on roadways.

There are two parts in this presentation. In the first part, crash frequency and crash injury severity are predicted using historical crash records for highways in Ontario, Canada and statistical analysis techniques. Various issues in developing statistical models are discussed. The differences between heavy-vehicle-involved and non-heavy-vehicle-involved crashes are also identified based on the model results. Various countermeasures to reduce crash frequency and injury severity are suggested. In the second part, vehicle interaction and conflicts are observed and analyzed using individual vehicle trajectory data for a freeway in California, U.S.A. and surrogate safety measures. The differences in car-following and lane-change behavior between car drivers and heavy-vehicle drivers, and their impacts on the probability of crash occurrence are discussed. The findings will provide insights into development of proactive traffic control strategies which will guide drivers to avoid vehicle conflicts and prevent crash occurrence
