-Call for Application: GRAS-Net Session at 2022 Gwangju Democracy Forum


The Gwangju Democracy Forum (GDF) is an annual international meeting of the May 18 Memorial Foundation to bring together democracy advocates, activists, researchers, and policy-makers to discuss challenges of democracy and human rights at the local, national and global levels and seek possible solutions for them as a way to commemorate and practice the Spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980.


The GDF will take place for 4 days from 18 to 21 May (Wednesday to Saturday) 2022 during the Gwangju Democracy Week in a hybrid, virtual and in-person manners. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all overseas participants will be invited to join the GDF virtually while some participants in South Korea will be invited to attend sessions physically in Gwangju.


The specific objectives of the 2022 GDF are i) to define an incomplete transitional justice, ii) to discuss the effects of the pandemic on democracy, against discrimination and inequality , and iii) to prospect Asia democracy in 2022 and contribute to stronger and extend international networking among democracy advocates and organizations.


Under the theme “An Answer to Global Crisis - Collaboration and Solidarity”, around  9 thematic sessions are to be organized under 3 thematic clusters which are i) Defining an incomplete transitional justice - Remaining Tasks, ii) COVID-19 and Democracy, iii) Democracy in Asia - Prospects for 2022.


- Dates: 18 to 20 May (Wednesday to Friday) 2022  - arriving in the morning of 18 May (Wed.) and departure after dinner on 20 May (Friday)

- Eligibility: Foreign students studying in the field of  human rights, democracy, and civil society in the higher educational institutions (post-graduate program/master's degree)

in South Korea  

- No of Participants: maximum 40

- Working Language: English

- Accommodation (two persons in one room in a modest hotel) and Meals will be provided for 2 Nights and 3 Days from lunch 18 to dinner 20 May 2022.

- Main program: visit to the May 18 National Cemetery and Asia Cultural Center, attending the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award Ceremony (May 18) as well as the sessions of the Gwangju Democracy Forum including the GRAS-Net session on 20 May 2022.

- Application Deadline: April 5 (Tues).  The first Come First Served principle may be applied.
