Many biological processes can be modeled by transition between two states. Examples include protein conformational changes, folding-unfolding transitions, opening and closing of ion channels, and rupturing of molecular bonds. This talk will provide a comprehensive review of the two-state transition process. We will start with the classical model established by Kramers in 1940. The population density of states are described by Boltzmann factors for the corresponding free energies. We will then examine how mechanical force affects the equilibrium between the two states. Next, we will introduce kinetics of transitions where time-dependent behaviors are considered. Examples in real-world systems will be given throughout the presentation.
