▣ Abstract
Biohybrid systems, developed through the use of living materials as building blocks for artificial engineered systems, are emerging platforms to offer new strategies for bioengineering fields. By leveraging unique characteristics that living cells can offer, the biohybrid technology has the potential to revolutionize (1) regenerative medicine by regenerating a variety of patient-specific tissues and organs; (2) biorobotics field by providing bio-actuators and bio-sensors with unprecedented performances at the nano- and micro-scale; and (3) cultured meat industry by producing environmentally friendly and scalable lab-grown meats. In this talk, I will focus on the development of two biohybrid systems: biohybrid stingray (Park et al., 2016, Science) and biohybrid fish (Lee* and Park* et al., 2022, Science). I will cover our design and manufacturing techniques, control mechanisms, and performances of these two biohybrid systems. Additionally, I will discuss our applications and recent progress of biohybrid technologies, including human cardiac and skeletal muscle disease models and new biohybrid manufacturing technologies.
