▣ Abstract
Hemorheology, the study of blood flow properties, plays a crucial role in the development and optimization of microfluidic systems for biomedical applications. Microfluidics, involving the manipulation of fluids at sub-millimeter scales, offers transformative potential in diagnostics, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. This lecture will delve into the fundamental principles of hemorheology and explore how the unique rheological properties of blood influence microfluidic behavior.
Key topics will include blood viscosity, shear-thinning behavior, and the impact of hematocrit levels on flow dynamics. We will examine how erythrocyte (red blood cell) deformability and aggregation affect microcirculatory flow and discuss the implications for the design of microfluidic devices. Additionally, the lecture will address the interaction between blood and microchannel surfaces, highlighting challenges such as clotting and hemolysis.
Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between blood rheology and microfluidic environments. This knowledge will equip them to innovate in the field of biomedical microfluidics, improving the design and functionality of microfluidic devices for enhanced biomedical performance.
