There is an increasing need and opportunity for robots to perform tasks outside of controlled environments. However, in the outside world, robots are constantly exposed to unexpected disturbances from uncertainties in the environment. This often makes simple tasks that humans take for granted, such as locomotion, very difficult. This talk presents the status of legged robots in the past, key findings in achieving robust, dynamic locomotion, and the development story behind ARTEMIS, the fastest walking humanoid in the world.
