▣ Abstract

In efforts to employ carbon neutrality, unused heat resulting from industrial processes is emerging as an excellent opportunity to utilize waste heat that is being discarded into the atmosphere. Hanwha Power Systems(HPS) introduces the innovative, eco-friendly supercritical CO2 power generation solution that recovers wasted heat and produces electricity. Our state-of-the-art emerging technology is outstanding for applications in the Waste-to-Power market, especially in natural gas pipeline compressor stations. sCO2 Power System uses the gas turbine exhaust waste heat produced by compressor stations to generate electricity by using supercritical CO2 as the working fluid.  Supercritical means that the CO2 is in a closed-loop system maintained above a critical temperature and pressure such that the CO2 remains in a high density state as a working fluid. This system consists of an sCO2 engine core package, an CO2 management system, a heater and an air-cooled pre-cooler. This entire process consists of a closed loop system so there are absolutely no emission released. Since it does not require water and can be operated remotely, it is very suitable for power generation in remote locations such as natural gas pipeline compressor stations. The sCO2 power systems require 30% less land generate up to 20% more power and requires 20% less O&M cost compared to competing technologies(ORC, Organic Rankine Cycle). In addition, it enables direct heat recovery, making it safer and user-friendly compared to existing technologies that use flammable and toxic working fluids. A compressor station operating a 20MW rated gas turbine would support an sCO2 power system capable of providing 6MW class of power generation with an annual carbon emission offset of 17,000 tonnes. sCO2 power cycles for power generation can also be used effectively when utilizing heat from industrial facilities, concentrated solar power and nuclear power. In 2021, HPS signed with H-company the world's first MW scale sCO2 power system supply contract to be applied to CSP(Concentrated Solar Power). This project is currently under development. The sCO2 power system was developed by HPS through the support of a US Department of Energy program and successfully completed the technology verification in 2021. In 2022, our technology was recognized and awarded the prestigious R&D 100 Award(https://www.rd100awards.com/), which selects the 100 most significant innovative technologies. HPS hope that you consider joining Hanwha in leading the path to carbon neutrality by utilizing our world-recognized sCO2 power systems.
