Research Areas & Labs

The field of signal processing solves creative problems and cultivates new intellectual abilities by processing, analyzing, and learning various types of signals, big data, and knowledge in an engineering manner. Data science and engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and distributed computing are topics of study. This is a research area that processes, analyzes, and learns various types of signals (text, voice/audio, video, bio-signals), big data, and knowledge using computers and digital devices. Through big data analysis, we can find solutions to problems that are difficult to solve with existing mathematical/scientific theories and produce new knowledge. Detailed research areas include speech, image processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Well-known intelligent computational systems include intelligent assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, Google self-driving cars, and artificial intelligence automatic diagnosis systems such as IBM Watson.

Undergraduate courses for signal processing include data structures, signals and systems, digital signal processing, communication networks, computer architecture, and probability and random variables.

Speech & Image Processing

Speech and image processing develops algorithms and technologies that acquire, analyze, process, and synthesize voice, image, and video signals from various sensors. Speech processing is a research field that analyzes the characteristics of voice signals, the most basic means of human communication, using statistical and mathematical models so that computers can understand who spoke what words by how he/she felt. Image processing is a research field that analyzes and processes images and videos obtained from cameras using mathematical models. Such analysis can be extended to systems for image compression, image restoration, and fingerprint recognition. Applied research topics related to voice and image processing include voice recognition, medical imaging, biometric authentication, computer vision, computer graphics, and augmented reality, which are promising research topics that are essential in the era of big data.
