- Functional Bio-integrated Electronics research team have developed a passive, bioresorbable electrode array with an ultra-thin Si encapsulation barrier. In vivo neural recordings with the bioresorbable neural sensors in adult rat animal models showed good performance associated with both action potentials and local field potentials. This particular device functions for a programmed time period and slowly dissolves in the body over time such that the secondary surgery to extract the device is not required. The National Research Foundation supported this research. The new results are published in the journal of ACS Nano.

- Functional Bio-integrated Electronics research team observed the the chemical stability of ultrathin films of thermally grown silicon dioxide in aqueous solutions with different combinations of chemistries that are present in biofluids. These findings establish foundational data of relevance to predicting lifetimes of implantable devices that use silicon dioxide as biofluid barriers, and of other classes of systems, such as environmental monitors, where encapsulation against water penetration is important. The National Research Foundation supported this research. The new findings are published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
