Title : Application of Derived Quantities from the Results of General Electrical Tests
Abstract:
The safe operation of nuclear facilities is based on the proper condition of information and control (I&C) cables, which have to be capable to fulfil their safety function even during design-based event (DBE). The functionality of nuclear power plant (NPP) cables is tested by the standardised qualification tests. The condition of the core insulation and has high importance from the point of view of reliability ofthese cables. The condition of the insulation can be examined by the measurement of chemical, mechanical or electrical properties. The electrical methods, contrary to chemical and mechanical tests, are non-destructive ones therefore these enable on-site testing. The general electric tests provide information about the general condition of the insulation by the measurement of dielectric properties of insulating material in frequency- (e.g. loss factor measurement) or time-domain (insulation resistance or leakage current and return voltage measurement). However, in many cases these methods provide easily interpretable characteristic properties of the cable insulation, these values cannot be used for reliable condition monitoring because of the weak correlation with the material ageing. Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Rate (DAR) are the simplest derived quantities, which are calculated form the results of insulation resistance measurement, but the application of these values for condition monitoring is also limited. In this study, new quantities are deducted from the results of insulation resistance, loss factor measurement extended voltage response measurement and the correlation with material ageing is tested by a simple regression analysis on EPR insulated of instrumentation and control cables.
