Title : Quantitative evaluation of demyelination in cervical spinal cord (CSC) using ultra-high-b DWI
Abstract:
Imaging of human cervical spinal cord is difficult, because of it small cross-sectional area and pulsation of surrounding cervico-spinal fluid (CSF). Recently, diffusion-tensor MRI (DTI) has been drawing attention to quantitatively evaluate CSC. For instance, the fractional-anisotropy (FA) value, which is commonly used to present the anisotropy of the oriented tissue, may not be used to distinguish between increased water content in extra-axonal space (EAS) and increased water exchange at the interface due to the demyelination. We have developed a novel MRI method, ultra-high-B DWI (UHb-DWI), that show quantitative measure of demyelination in the CSC white-matter. We also developed a Monte-Carlo-Simulation (MSC) software to interpret the measured UHb-DWI data. UHb-DWI can be used for quantitative evaluation of corpus-callosum in the brain. The method and currently available data will be presented.
