Graduate School Curriculum

The curriculum of the Department of Clothing and Textiles is comprised of courses that nurture students’ ability to scientifically analyze and recognize the clothing industry and how people interact with clothes to grow as professionals who can make real contributions to the clothing industry. To this end, we have established courses in the fields of clothing material science, apparel design and construction, and clothing social science with the purpose of teaching professionally relevant knowledge about the clothing industry by teaching about the properties of materials, characteristics of the human body, and consumers’ social and emotional wants and needs.

Curricular Requirements

< Requirements for Master’s Program >

▪ Students must acquire at least 30 credits in order to obtain their master’s degree.


▪ Of those 30 credits, 24 must be earned from courses offered by our department, but the remaining 6 can be acquired from courses within our department or in other departments upon your academic advisor’s approval (however, Statistical Analysis and Research Methods in Clothing Textiles can be replaced with compatible classes taught in English offered by other departments).


▪ Research Ethics, Directed Research, Statistical Analysis, Research Methods in Clothing and Textiles, and Clothing and Textile Seminar courses are required for master’s students. Students must complete 3 courses in their major area and 1 course in each of the 2 other major areas.


▪ Master’s students who did not major in clothing and textiles during their undergraduate program must take undergraduate courses in addition to the 30 credits required for their master’s degree in accordance with departmental policies (these students should complete 5 semesters in principle).


< Requirements for Doctoral Program >

▪ Students must acquire at least 30 credits in order to obtain their doctoral degree.


▪ Of those 30 credits, 21 must be earned from courses offered by our department, but the remaining 9 can be acquired from courses within our department or in other departments upon your academic advisor’s approval (however, Advanced Statistics can be replaced with a compatible class offered by other departments).


▪ Research Ethics, Directed Research, Clothing and Textile Seminar, and 1 course among Statistical Analysis, Research Methods in Clothing and Textiles, and Advanced Statistics are required for doctoral students. Students must complete 4 courses in their major area and 1 course in another major area. Doctoral students who completed their master’s program in our department cannot take the same courses that they completed during their master’s program.


▪ Doctoral students who did not major in clothing and textiles neither during their undergraduate program nor master’s program must take undergraduate courses in addition to the 30 credits required for their doctoral degree in accordance with departmental policies.


< Requirements for Combined Master’s and Doctoral Program >

▪ Students must earn at least 54 credits in order to obtain their doctoral degree through the combined master’s and doctoral program.


▪ Of those 54 credits, 42 must be earned from courses offered by our department, but the remaining 12 can be acquired from courses within our department or in other departments upon your academic advisor’s approval (however, Advanced Statistics can be replaced with a compatible class offered by other departments).


▪ Research Ethics, Directed Research, Statistical Analysis, Research Methods in Clothing and Textiles, Advanced Statistics, and Clothing and Textiles Seminar are required for combined master’s and doctoral students. Students must complete 6 courses in their major area and 3 courses in other major areas.


▪ Combined master’s and doctoral students who did not major in clothing studies during their undergraduate program must take undergraduate courses in addition to the 54 credits required for their doctoral degree in accordance with departmental policies.

 

Comprehensive Examinations
  1. Master’s program: 2 courses for the comprehensive test and a foreign language test
  2. Doctoral program: 3 courses for the comprehensive test and a foreign language test
  3. Combined master’s and doctoral program: 3 courses for the comprehensive test and a foreign language test

Comprehensive examinations and foreign language tests will be conducted in accordance with the departmental policies.

Course Descriptions

Statistical Analysis / 3 credits

The aim of this course is to obtain the basic skills to statistically process and analyze the data for research in clothing and textile.

Research Methods in Clothing and Textiles / 3 credits

This course is designed to obtain the skills of setting research topics, analyzing data and the estimating criteria, and trying out the research plan with the methodology in clothing and textiles.

Studies in Traditional Clothing / 3 credits

The construction of the traditional clothing is analyzed and the characteristics of these garments are compared.

Clothing & Ergonomics / 3 credits

This class will cover the ergonomic pattern making and body measurements. The independent study will be performed.

Apparel Manufacturing in Fashion Industry / 3 credits

This course is designed to study the functions of various styles of apparel. The use of elements for specific garments is discussed.

Advanced Fashion MarketingⅠ,Ⅱ / each 3 credits

Analysis of marketing theories, models, and conceptual frameworks. Examination of marketing strategies, trends and technological developments in relation to business and consumer aspects. Includes business to business, consumer goods, customer relations, and economic theories.

Studies on Design Process for Apparel Line / 3 credits

The aim of this course is to investigate the recent topics in fashion design process.

Pattern Design and Fashion I / 3 credits

The goal of this course is to obtain the various pattern drafting techniques needs for apparel production development in the apparel industry.

Special Topics in Fashion Planning / 3 credits

The aim of this course is to investigate the procedure and methods to plan fashion products for special needs.

Design and Planning of Smart Clothing / 3 credits

This course aims to study how to design and plan the digital smart clothing based on the knowledge on its history, development trend and key technologies.

Fashion Theory / 3 credits

This course aims to investigate fashion principles and the processes of fashion cycles, and to explore social psychological theories to develop analytical skills to investigate fashion phenomena.

Special Topics in Clothing / 3 credits

The aim of this class is to study specific topics on the quality issues of apparel.

Apparel Production System / 3 credits

This course is designed to research apparel engineering related to the apparel production in the clothing industry.

Special Topics in Textile Finishing / 3 credits

Labs are provided for students to practice general and functional finishes. Applications of finishing techniques for artistic and functional fabrics and their evaluation are studied.

Pattern Grading / 3 credits

The aim of this course is to study pattern grading methods need in the apparel industry.

Global Fashion Marketing / 3 credits

This course is an integrative view of global fashion marketing research. The course examines various global fashion branding & marketing, customer equity research, digital & culture marketing research.

Contemporary Fashion Merchandising Issues / 3 credits

Exploration of current topics through readings in apparel business, fashion marketing, and consumer behavior.

Special Topics Functional Clothing and Materials / 3 credits

The selection, development, care and maintenance of the functional textile materials based on the advanced science and technology.

Special Topics in Consumer Behavior and Fashion / 3 credits

This course is to learn research methods applying consumer behavioral theories of emotions, cognitions and behavioral responses, to investigate consumer behavior processes of choosing, using and disposing fashion products.

Recent Textiles / 3 credits

This course covers the recent trends, related technologies, and the latest information of new textiles.

Pattern Design And FashionⅡ / 3 credits

The gole of this course is to understand the characteristics of global clothing design and examines related pattern design techniques.

Research Methods for Fashion Consumer Behavior / 3 credits

This course discusses the valid use and applications of qualitative and quantitative research methods for the in-depth analysis of fashion consumer behaviors and the culture of body and fashion consumption in contemporary society.

Fashion Technology / 3 credits

This course reviews the seminal and latest literature related to the applications of technology and analytics to studying fashion to enrich our knowledge of this research area. Based on this, students develop a research proposal where their knowledge and research methods in this area are applied.

Sustainable Development(SDGs) and Fashion Industry / 3 credits

This course is to understand the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in global perspectives, and to conduct research studies to elaborate and promote the action plans of SDGs in the fashion industry.

Recent Topics in Fashion Illustration / 3 credits

This course aims to develop student's own portfolio of fashion illustration on the basis of the new expression techniques acquired through research on the worldwide trends in fashion illustration.

Apparel Construction Capstone Design / 3 credits

Analyze the techniques required for clothing design. Develop new apparel product design technology through industry-university collaboration projects.

Capstone Design of Traditional Korean Costume / 3 credits

In the class, the characteristics of Korean traditional clothing making techniques are studied and individual projects that reflect this are carried out.

Advanced Statistics / 3 credits

This course teaches students advanced statistical tools to statistically process and analyze the data for research in clothing and textiles.

CSR Research in Fashion Business / 3 credits

This course reviews the seminal and latest literature related to the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) management of fashion businesses to enhance students’ knowledge of this research area. Based on this, students develop a research proposal where their learning and research methods in this area are applied.

Science of Textile Finishing / 3 credits

The primary purpose of this course is to gain fundamental understanding of principles for the finishing of fibers, yarns, and textiles, and apply this knowledge for advanced textile research.

Development of Functional Clothing / 3 credits

This course aims to develop designs of high-performance clothing adopted from results of individual projects on developing new products based on the research on R&D trends and design methods in the field of functional clothing.

Clothing Sensibility Science / 3 credits

This course provides an overview of the principle of human senses such as visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and the process of perception. And it focuses on inquiries about the physical properties of clothing materials and methodology of sensibility science for developing sensibility clothing connected with the mind action system.

Sportswear Production System / 3 credits

Development of apparel prototypes for athletic use to enhance comfort, mobility, and safety. Design and evaluation of sportswear for individual with physical challenges.

Nanomaterials and Biomaterials in Textiles / 3 credits

New research and development in nanomaterials and biomaterials in textiles are reviewed with recent articles, and their applications are discussed.

Clothing Product Development Process / 3 credits

This class will study aesthethical function and ergonomic performance of design and technical function of clothing.

Smart & Intelligent Textile / 3 credits

To learn concepts, types, principles, developmental trends and applications of smart and intelligent textiles.

Textile Materials Science / 3 credits

This course covers structural and physical properties of textile components, i.e., fibers, yarns, and fabrics, and their relationships.

Luxury Brand Management / 3 credits

To learn the global luxury brand management, cases and theory will be discussed.

Fashion Marketing Independent Study / 3 credits

Discuss about research trends in fashion marketing and develop the research paper related fashion marketing field.

Special Topics in Clothing Behavior / 3 credits

This course is to investigate recent research trends in the field of clothing behavior, and to conduct in-depth analysis for theoretical development.

Special Topics in Fashion Consumption and Culture / 3 credits

This course is to explore the invention processes of fashion consumption culture and fashion theories explaining the characteristics of consumer culture in postmodern society.

Textiles and Sustainability / 3 credits

This course covers issues of sustainability, renewability and recyclability in textile materials and industry.

Modern Culture, Art and Apparel Design / 3 credits

This course aims to research the influence of the modern culture and art to apparel design, and to develop the ability of apparel designing inspired from the influence.

Sustainable Fashion Marketing Research / 3 credits

The course opens the concept of sustainable fashion marketing, building on fashion marketing theory and current challenges in sustainable consumption. A comprehensive research includes sustainable fashion marketing issues including sustainable fashion trends, sustainable fashion consumers, sustainable fashion culture, sustainability marketing mix and sustainable fashion business.

Contents and Smart Clothing Design / 3 credits

This course leads to develop the contents-based designs of digital smart clothing derived from the exploration of the consumer needs depending upon the type of function of the smart clothing.

Smart Textile Sensor / 3 credits

To classify smart textile sensors, and learn textile based pressure sensors, strain sensors, electrodes etc.

Advanced Research in Global Fashion Business / 3 credits

This course surveys advanced theories and principles of global fashion business and related literature and build students’ knowledge about the research stream and applicable methods, to understand the fashion retail business research at the graduate level.

Advanced Fashion Color Planning / 3 credits

This course aims to study how to plan a fashion color story as a proper reflection of the concurrent fashion trend, based on the knowledge of the fashion color theory and the color planning process.

Special Topic in Functional Fibers and Polymeric Materials / 3 credits

This course offers fundamental polymer science to understand physical and chemical structures, formation, characterization of functional fibers. Current research topics of functional fiber and polymer materials, such as knitting and weaving structure design, biomimetic design, surface modification, and stimuli-responsive textiles, will be discussed as well.

Creative Apparel Design Development) / 3 credit

In this class, students will learn design skills to develop creative clothing designs through analyses of related research and collection/exhibition trends. They will apply various design methods.

Field Training in Apparel and Textile Industry / 3 credits

This course is designed to provide students with professional level work experience in the fields of Apparel and Textiles to help students find their future career path. Students will gain a broader, in-depth understanding of the business/industry or research organization through on-the-job training,

Directed ResearchⅠ / 0 credit

Independent study with the thesis adviser. This course is open to students developing a master’s thesis.
